slim form factor
Garmin's nA vis pack top of the line features into a slim form factor.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen
3-inch screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen
4.3-inch screen

New Features -- Where Am I? Where's My Car?
The nA vi 700 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?"

At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nA vi 700s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

New Features -- Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

See Better, See More
The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

First Rate Map Data
All nA vi 700s come preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nA vi to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nA vi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Integrated FM Traffic Receiver
TMC traffic service coverage map
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nA vi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous a there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with purchase of this device. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

1 out of 5 stars Battery Died, Slow Processor   January 5, 2009
J. Downey (washington dc)
Battery died (discharges from full to empty in seconds) and processor continues to slow (while driving, the vehicle sometimes takes seconds to update, causing missed turns and erroneous details). Updated software to no avail. Sent Garmin tech suppt three emails; no response. On hold w/ tech support for more than 40min before quitting. Threw unit away.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool that works as advertised   January 5, 2009
L. Hartman (Portland, or)
This was a holiday gift for my husband and he is very picky about electronics. He loves it! Large bright easy to read screen. Satellite pick up is satisfactory. Easy to understand voice with great detail. This thing blows my built-in Toyota navigation system away. Great price too

3 out of 5 stars good, but not worth the money   January 4, 2009
PapaK (Ohio, USA)
I bought 760 because of the impressive set of features and the hype about its improved processor. I guess that the whole 7XX series is about the same.
Mounting: the standard mount is easy to use. I hope that the heavily used clip-on mechanism lasts for a long time. I also have a third-party charger that works through USB, but this turns navigation OFF.
Battery charge lasts as advertised.
User interface: very nice intuitive menus. I could use all the features without ever turning to the manual. Display is clear and changes modes according to the time of day. I wouldn't want to trade it for a smaller one. One minor complaint is that it always shows the arrival time: I would prefer "time left in transit" as an option.
Start-up: Satellite acquisition time is surprisingly variable: from seconds to several minutes. I have had very fast staring time in poor weather and between tall building, as well as very lengthy starts on a clear day with not obstacles. It first tries to position itself at the place where it has been turned off, which is a good idea only part of the time.
Entertainment features are nice to have, but a video player and third-party games would have been a welcome addition. Because these units are thief magnets, I wouldn't want to leave it in the car (my friend had his windshield broken by a GPS thief). The Garmin lock may inconvenience the thief (or you), but does not prevent the theft itself. If you have to carry the unit with you, it may as well do more for you. Video and game features are now built into cheaper units and appear more useful than Garmin's collection of silly car icons. Speaker quality is OK for voice, but not for music listening.
Bluetooth speakerphone works very well for me, with instant synchronization of the phonebook, call lists, etc. It is my favorite feature.
The ability to broadcast over the car radio seemed like a good idea, but the frequency range is densely packed by local stations and signal quality suffers.
Map accuracy and POIs: Most of the time the map is accurate. Although I use the most updated version of the map, I had two cases when the POI wasn't there. A few times the streets that are 2-3 years old were not on the map.
Directions: most routes will accurately bring you to where you go. However, the software has an unhealthy and rather annoying attraction towards smaller streets, when a highway would have been a faster route (no, I am not choosing the option to avoid highways). My guess is that it is counting on highway traffic, but is oblivious to the existence of traffic lights and stop signs on smaller streets. I wish there was a number that you could key in to indicate your preference towards highways. Even when I upload into the unit a map created by much more sensible MapQuest, the directions between the points get recalculated the Garmin way.
The weakest parts of the directions are the start and the end. For me, these points are often big parking lots of shopping malls, business parks, etc. The unit is totally hapless in these situations: it does not inform you were the lot entrances and exits are, just tells you to move to or from a particular street, which is not always possible. A few times it tried to start me in the wrong direction of a one-way street.
Navigation in real time: Usually, each turn is announced 3 times: at the beginning of the segment, about 0.5 miles in advance, and immediately before the turn. The first two announcements are useful. However, during highway driving, the unit's announced positioning typically lags by 100ft or so, and the last announcement comes too late. The good thing is that if you miss a turn the new route is recalculated very fast.
Overall, I like my unit, but question the wisdom of paying about $300 for it: some cheaper ones apparently have more useful features, some included features (e.g. FM transmission) are not very useful, navigation has its quirks, and, at this price, one may seriously consider an older PDA with a GPS card.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 760   January 4, 2009
Bluemarlin15 (Tampa, FL)
My first experience with a GPS unit. Very easy to set up and use. I tried using it without the windshield mount (included) which was NOT a good idea. I liked the fact that when a wrong turn was made, or too soon, it immediately recalculated and got you back on track.

5 out of 5 stars Review of the NUVI 760   January 4, 2009
C. Dinakar (Presently in Dallas, TX)
The Garmin absolutely rocks. Taking the lead in the series is the Nuvi 760 very cool at the price and extremely good at what it is supposed to do. Find you places at the shortest possible time or route. Highly rated and appreciated.Garmin nuevi 760 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Automobile Navigator
